Guildford at Clandon Park

Guildford at Clandon Park

27 Oct 2017

The Arts Society Guildford took time out to visit Clandon House, the Palladian mansion near Guildford, Surrey, which was devastated by fire over two years ago. The shell, almost the only remains of the building, has been made safe by the National Trust and visitors are allowed inside to see the damage.

The Trust has advised that six architects designs for the reconstruction of the fabric of the house have been put forward. The winning scheme will be announced is next week.

Guildford Society members donned hard hats and hi-vis jackets to gain entry to the awe-inspiring shell and although deeply shocked by the extent of the damage were amazed that so much of the marble in the main entrance hall appeared unscathed.

Sarah Nelson, our Vice Chair can be seen pointing to the marble fireplace, one of the few remaining features of Clandon Park. If you get the chance – go and see it! Once they start on the reconstruction it may be a long time before we get another chance.
