Cecilie Gamst Berg: Demystifying Chinese Writing

As part of our “Meet the …” programme, a group of our members attended the first in a series of events featuring Cecilie Gamst Berg, exploring Chinese writing and cookery. The event was fully booked.

Cecilie gave us an engaging and visually inspiring introduction to the art of Chinese script and symbolism. With over 30 years of experience, she combined insightful explanations with interactive elements, offering participants a deeper appreciation of this rich cultural tradition.

Especially interesting was the personal perspective she brought: Cecilie has lived in Hong Kong for 30 years in a society rooted in the Cantonese heartland. She explained how the political situation, particularly the increasing influence of mainland China, is shaping Chinese signage and language.

After the meeting, conversation continued over coffee at a nearby bar, allowing participants to further reflect on the themes discussed.
