The Arts Society Welwyn Garden visit to Verulamium Museum, St Albans
12 Jul 2024
This pop-up trip to Verulamium Museum in St Albans was a fascinating insight into Roman daily life.
Several of our party made the short walk across Verulamium Park to view a beautiful mosaic and hypocaust heating system before being welcomed at the museum by the curator, David Thurold.
He proved to be an enthusiastic and genial host, so knowledgeable and proud of the extensive collection evidencing all areas of life in Roman Verulamium.
My particular highlights were the tortoise on the statue of Mercury, the graffiti on an original plaster wall, and the fascinating details of the discovery of the Sandridge hoard of gold coins, one of the largest found to date in England.
I’m so pleased that the museum is so close by in St Albans, it will make my return visit so easy!
