Dear Members,

We are looking forward to welcoming you to this month's pre-Easter lecture on Thursday. Last week I attended the SW Area Spring Chairmans Forum at Sandy Park, a really vibrant get-together after a number of zoom meetings. I was delighted to be asked to make a short presentation on our use of social media and this was well received. We have a reputation in the SW for being an edgy, arty, plugged-in lot.
The launch of our Trail by Train, St. Ives to St. Erth has
been received with much acclaim. Your committee plan to try out the trail very soon. Have you used the free trail information yet? Do let us know what you think. The GWR have kindly agreed to display a large poster at the St Erth railway station that all passengers can scan, free of charge, before travelling on to St. Ives. Lastly, I shall be attending a TAS Town Hall meeting next week for the refresh and re- launch of the Arts Society/RBA Star Students competition run in association with the Royal Society of British Artists. We have had in the past a number of Penwith College student winners who were selected to show their work in London at the Mall Galleries. We hope there will be more winners in the future.
We shan't let the grass grow under our feet!

The Queen of Instruments: The Lute within Old Masters Paintings

Adam Busiakiewicz

Adam Busiakiewicz is an Art Historian, Lecturer and Lutenist. After completing his Bachelor’s Degree in History at University College London in 2010 he held the position of Head of Historical Interpretation (curator) at Warwick Castle. He left the castle in 2013 after winning a full AHRC studentship to pursue a Master’s Degree in Fine and Decorative Art at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. He is currently finishing his doctorate in Art History at the University of Warwick for which he

received a full scholarship.

Adam is a Lecturer / Educator at the National Gallery and Guide Lecturer at the Wallace Collection, where he has organised several events and courses on Music & Art as well as other subjects. He has also given talks and performances at the Royal

Collection, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Sotheby’s Institute of Art.

Alongside his publications and scholarly articles, Adam is the co-editor of arthistorynews.com, one of the internet’s most popular art history blogs.

The Lute within Old Masters Paintings Thursday 7th April 2022, Zennor Auditorium, Penwith College

The lute holds a special place in the history of art: painters of the Italian Renaissance depicted golden-haired angels plucking its delicate strings, evoking celestial harmony; in the sixteenth century, during the rise of humanism, the lute was a becoming pastime of educated courtiers, as depicted by the likes of Holbein and Titian; throughout the seventeenth century, the instrument continued to play a key role in emphasising the intimate, debauched and transient pleasures of interior scenes by Jan Steen and portraits by Frans Hals. This lecture looks at the lute, and other musical instruments, as devices to express various aspects of the human character throughout the ages. As part of this lecture, there is for live music performance; faithfully reproduced solo lute music.

Lutes are time-capsules - they are braced inside with odd scraps of cloth and printed paper. The author is building a lute full of daft stories, curious reminiscences and snippets of life in 21st-century Britain. This is a book of what's inside and what didn't quite make it.

Homesick by Catrina Davies published in paperback 2020

This is the second book by Catrina Davies and is set within a small area of West Penwith. It highlights the true meaning of the word home, and the courage needed to hold on to what is yours.
Homesick tells of the author’s experiences in survival on her own and the satisfaction gained with every small victory and of being self sufficient. Wonderfully descriptive of the countryside around her and hugely positive, despite drawing attention to the (often hidden) social inequalities that exist in this most beautiful part of Cornwall. Her love of the area glows from every page.

Report of Directory Day 2022

Having 'our' Liz Woods chairing directory day, we knew that this year was going to feel that bit extra special. This was the first time since Covid that this event has happened. There was a terrific atmosphere - a buzz of recognition of familiar faces and happiness at the human interaction. It felt like an enormous happy reunion.

For those who are unsure, this is a day is where the Arts Society lecturers (220 this year) gather at Central Hall Westminster to set out their stall, quite literally. They also get the chance to speak for one minute on stage to Arts Society representatives from all over the country. We in the audience decide whether we are interested in a lecturer for future programme planning. As someone described it, a bit like speed dating for lecturer selection.

I also discovered West Cornwall’s reputation of being exceptionally warm and hospitable with a vibrant, interesting audience, precedes us. This became apparent when talking to a newly accredited lecturer who lit up when he discovered where Joy and I had come from.

The potential shortlist is extremely exciting – from the 60’s, to plants, to Marathons, we promise to make a varied and stimulating programme.

Douglas Skeggs will be presenting 3 lectures on The Great Magicians of Spanish Art - Velazquez, Goya and Picasso on Monday 20th June at Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre. We start at 10.00 for a 10.30 lecture and will close around 3.15 - 3.30. The cost of the day including the 3 lectures, coffee on arrival and a 2 course buffet lunch is £43.

ONLINE - Ukraine Benefit Study Morning on Tuesday 12th April 2022 at 10.30am

An introduction to the 19th century artist Ilya Repin and the landscape paintings of Arkhip Kuindzhi, Ivan Shishkin and Isaac Levitan. All proceeds will be donated to the British Red Cross, Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

10.30-11.30am Lecture 1: Ilya Repin (1844-1930 born Chuhiv, Kharkiv province in modern day Ukraine). An introduction to this prolific and astounding realist painter, famous for his portraits and his genre and historical paintings.

10.30am-12pm Break

12-1pm Lecture 2: An introduction to the stunning, thought provoking and awe- inspiring landscapes of Arkhip Kuindzhi (1841-1910 born in Mariopol in modern day Ukraine), Ivan Shishkin (1832-1898 born in Yelabuga, Russia), and Isaac Levitan (1860-1900 born Kibarty in modern day Lithuania ).
