STREET ART AT CLAPHAM COMMON

STREET ART AT CLAPHAM COMMON

13 Mar 2019

The Arts Society Clapham Common is approaching the end of its second successful year. We have attracted over 200 members so far but are keen to look to the future and to attract younger members, the type of art inquisitive people who are not usually available to come to our daytime lectures. To this end, we organised our first evening event at Omnibus Theatre in Clapham so that more people could experience what The Arts Society has to offer.

The engaging Doug Gillen gave a thought-provoking and entertaining talk on “Hidden Canvasses: Street Art and the City”, which covered the origins of graffiti art from basic “Tags” in 1960s New York to Banksy  and modern day street art festivals, which was followed by drinks, supper and live music.

With more than 60 guests having an enjoyable night out the evening was considered a great success. A further bonus was that proceeds from the event, and fundraising on the night, raised funds for Routes, a project that aims to make the arts accessible to primary aged children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

By popular demand we are now planning our next event - so watch this space.
