Nordic painters embraced French Realism, Naturalism and Impressionism, founding outdoor art colonies in Skagen and Funen.
Perhaps it is the unique climate of the far north, the extremes of the Polar night and Midnight sun, which has forged such a distinctive Scandinavian culture. Danish, Swedish, Finish and Norwegian painters embraced modernity in terms of technique and subject matter, following in the footsteps of the French Realists, Naturalists, Impressionists and Symbolists. Many studied in Paris, but they invariably came home establishing rural colonies to paint en plein air or directly from nature outdoors. At Skagen, on the northern tip of Jutland, Denmark, Kroyer focused on depicting the life of the fisherfolk.
