This Quarter's Artist in Focus: Claudia Vanessa Fallis

For this Autumn's Artist in Focus, The Arts Society Mallorca introduces British-American artist Claudia Vanessa Fallis, who has made Mallorca her home since 1995. Claudia has followed a wonderfully varied creative path, working as an artist, interior designer and art director for film and television. Today, she is fully dedicated to her studio practice at ART STUDIO PORTALS in Portals Nous.

At the heart of her work is collage. Claudia tears and layers paper, playing with colour, texture, space and proportion to create abstract compositions that suggest rather than describe. Her approach is intuitive, but never accidental: each fragment, torn edge and layer has its part to play.

Her fascination with Mallorca’s architectural heritage is another important thread in her work. When she first arrived in Palma, she was captivated by the faded façades, patterned hydraulic tiles, ornate plasterwork and other traces of the city’s Modernisme past. These fragments of a disappearing world have found their way into her collages, transformed into something fresh and contemporary.

Rather than telling us exactly what to see, Claudia leaves room for our own memories and associations. Her work is an invitation to look, pause and perhaps discover something familiar in an unexpected place.
