Trip to Polesden Lacey 8 June 2026

"Didn't we have a lovely day the day we went to Polesden Lacey"

Whilst the weather could have been better, we didn't let a bit of rain spoil our visit to this National Trust gem. Our first stop was the lovely coffee shop and cafe [of course] where we were already admiring the lovely flower borders and impressive buildings.

We had the pleasure of a guided tour of the gardens and grounds including the amazing rose garden and newly designed lavender garden finishing with a visit to the Pet Cemetery.

A tasty lunch was followed by an exploration of the House: its lavish decorations, exquisite artworks and objets d'art. Laterly owned by the socialite Margaret Greville and her father brewing magnate, William McEwan, the house is a testament to their passion for collection. 

With the help of friendly and knowledgeable guides we wended our way from one spectacular room to another, the most magnificent room had to be the Saloon that clearly showed the influence of architects from the Ritz who Margaret had brought in to transform the House. Alongside the painting and furniture we heard about the famous visitors to the House including Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Some of us were able to avoid the temptations of the second-hand bookshop and gift shop whilst other took full advantage and before we knew it the visit was over, the rain had stopped and we were on the coach home. No sing-song this time - maybe on the next visit.
