TAS Driffield Wolds visit Burton Constable Hall
12 May 2026
On Monday 11th May, members and friends of The Arts Society Driffield Wolds visited the amazing Burton Constable Hall. This hidden gem set in Capability Brown landscaped parkland between Skirlaugh and Aldborough in Holderness does not get the recognition it deserves. In the company of enthusiastic and knowledgable guides Jenny Scruton and husband David, our group was given a potted history of the Hall, its family and its treasures. The Hall has a long and fascinating history dating back to the Norman Conquest.
In the first photo (all taken by our visits secretary Megan Price), our group is shown with our guides Jenny and David (both right) in the Great Hall before the magnificent fireplace surmounted by the armorial shield of the Constable family. Other photos depict some of the many treasures including the Long Gallery which takes up all the upper floor on the West front. The Dining Room was designed by T. Lightoler with dining table and chairs by John Lowry. The Grand Staircase was also designed by T. Lightoler. The extraordinary dragon chair was carved by TW Wallis from a sketch by Lady Marianne Clifford Constable. The East Yorkshire Yeomanry exhibition is from the collection of guide Neil Hutty.
