Built in the 17th century to defend the Bay of Palma and the ancient Roman port of Porto Pi, the castle reflects the strategic importance of Mallorca at the crossroads of Mediterranean trade routes. Originally constructed to protect against pirate and Berber attacks, it later served various roles, including a prison for officers and an artillery battery. Its distinctive trapezoidal design, with bastions at each corner, is the result of centuries of expansion and adaptation.

Since 1981, the castle has been home to a military museum, offering visitors a compelling journey through its layered past. Today, managed by the Castillo de San Carlos Consortium, it stands as a remarkable testament to the island’s complex and fascinating history.
