This is a general lecture which looks at the history of silver (particularly British) and examines the history of both hallmarks and goldsmiths. It examines the way in which the history of silver reflects the more general social history of England. It is a broad survey of the changing role of silver in society, as well as an examination of different fashions and styles. It focusses on some of the leading figures in the history of the silver trade as well as looking at the role of the Goldsmith’s Company in promoting and protecting the craft.
