The opportunity

The Arts Society is looking for a Junior Developer to join our dynamic Digital team on a 6-month fixed-term contract, with the potential for extension up to 12 months. This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring developer to gain hands-on experience and contribute to meaningful projects within a renowned arts organisation.

You'll support the Head of Digital in improving and developing The Arts Society's web estate. You'll be instrumental in maintaining and enhancing our existing web assets, as well as building new websites and new functionality that will directly impact our members and the wider arts community.

You'll join the organisation at a time of digital transformation, giving you the opportunity to contribute to the future shape of the organisation's web estate. We are rebuilding our web estate on Drupal 11, developing new, custom functionality and exploiting the opportunities of a high-performing CMS.

We will also move some of our key operations onto a digital footing, allowing our members to make the most of their relationships with us.

What you'll be doing (key responsibilities)

  • Maintaining and updating existing websites and web applications.
  • Assisting in the development and deployment of new web features and functionalities.
  • Collaborating with the Head of Digital and other team members on project requirements and technical solutions.
  • Troubleshooting and debugging issues to ensure optimal web performance.
  • Writing clean, well-documented, and efficient code.
  • Participating in code reviews and contributing to team knowledge sharing.
  • Keeping up-to-date with emerging web technologies and best practices.

 

What you'll bring (required skills & qualifications)

  • Thorough understanding of relevant web technologies: PHP, HTML, CSS and Javascript.

  • Understanding of version control systems, particularly Git.

  • Basic knowledge of database concepts (e.g., SQL).

  • A strong desire to learn and grow as a developer.

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • A degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience/bootcamp completion.

 

Even better if you have (preferred skills & qualifications)

  • Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) such as Drupal.

  • Knowledge of Agile development methodologies.

  • Understanding of UI/UX principles, including a grasp of the fundamentals of web accessibility.

  • Experience with testing frameworks.

Salary range

£35,000 - £40,000 per annum (pro-rata for the fixed-term contract).

Selection process

Candidates will be assessed against the skills and qualifications sections using their written submissions and, where appropriate, their LinkedIn profile. Successful candidates will be invited to a remote shortlisting interview. Final interviews will be carried out in-person in central London (90 High Holborn), which will include a technical test.

Important notes

Candidates must be based in the United Kingdom for the duration of this contract and must be legally permitted to work in the UK. Checks will be carried out to ensure the successful candidate has the right to work in the UK before employment is confirmed.

The majority of work will be carried out remotely. However, the successful candidate must be available to travel to central London as required.
