Precious, Portable, Private: Miniature Art in the Renaissance with Arts Society accredited lecturer Dr Paula Nuttall
We tend to associate miniature art in the Renaissance with painted ‘miniatures’, be it in devotional books, or portraits. Yet the range of small-scale artworks produced in this period was vast and varied, as was the range of materials employed. Such objects were made for the elite, intended for personal use, and generally portable. Materially precious, their preciousness was enhanced by the finesse and virtuosity of their execution; they are among the most dazzlingly beautiful artworks produced in the period. The first two lectures focus on tiny objects, sacred and secular. The third lecture looks at a contrasting aspect of miniature art: its employment in large-scale artworks to encourage private viewing, be it for devotion or diversion.
