London Calling

Kunstmuseum Den Haag presents London Calling. Representing the first major survey of its kind in the Netherlands, the exhibition brings together highlights of postwar British figurative painting, including works by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Paula Rego. Organised in collaboration with Tate, London Calling will offer a snapshot of twentieth century London.  In the human figures, personal relationships and interiors, a city at the crossroads of ideas emerges in paint.

OLD FAVORITES, NEW ICONS

The exhibition also looks beyond the well-known names. London Calling makes room for artists who long remained out of the spotlight, such as Celia Paul, Eva Frankfurther and Denzil Forrester. Their paintings reveal different stories: from 1980s nightclubs to working-class neighbourhoods and quiet studios. In this way, a broader circle forms around the “School of London” — not an official movement, but a shared artistic quest to capture the world around them.
