The Arts Society Welwyn Garden visit to Spencer House

The Arts Society Welwyn Garden visit to Spencer House

23 Feb 2025

On 17th February a number of TASWG members enjoyed a fascinating private tour of Spencer House in St James's.

Since it was built for the first Lord and Lady Spencer between 1756-66, Spencer House has been widely admired as one of the beautiful houses in London. Home to seven generations of the family before it was let to a series of private tenants, the house went into decline in the 20th century and suffered bomb damage during the war.

Our Blue Badge guides gave us a great insight into the history of the house and its restoration, undertaken between 1985 and 1994. The afternoon was rounded off with teas and coffees in the splendid dining room.
