After the doldrums of the pandemic, the society has gone from strength to strength this last year. Nearly 40 people have joined our society, no doubt encouraged by the excellent programme of talks, visits and other events. New ideas this year included a Christmas lunch and a Spring meeting over coffee to welcome new members. The revamped brochure, distributed to various venues to encourage new members, has borne fruit.
The monthly meetings were well attended, and all our speakers were highly rated. Topics ranged from Oscar Wilde to Tutankhamun, from fashion designers to jazz, with art in prisons and at the Olympics featuring too.
Extra activities included visits to Manchester Museum for a Golden Mummies exhibition, Shakespeare North Playhouse for a tour and theatre performance, and an imminent visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park. These visits tend to book up quickly so book early to avoid disappointment! Ancient Roman remains at sites such as Leptis Magna and Palmyra were the focus for the ‘Day of Special Interest’ in February with more planned later this year.
Lastly not to forget the Community Arts projects funded from the monthly raffle. Beneficiaries include a primary school, after schools club and a prison. On which, more anon!
