Music to our ears!

Community Grant for Cornish musicians

The Arts Society Falmouth has donated £250, matched by a community grant for the same amount from The Arts Society, to help with the costs of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for thirty-eight members of Carrick Breeze and Wind, who have been invited to perform at the National Music for Youth festival at Symphony Hall, Birmingham on 7th July 2023. The band, open to students of all abilities, was selected from 1,000 other entries from all over the UK.

The students showcased their repertoire to members of The Arts Society Falmouth this week, performing the pieces which won them the nomination to represent Cornwall in the March regional festival. The adjudicator’s comments are noted next to each title: ‘Canned Heat’ (dynamic), ‘Moonlit Dreams’, (soothing) and ‘Can’t Stop the Beat’ (rousing).

As conductor Sarah Whomersly said “This is such a great experience for them to take part in. If they get chosen for the next performance, they may get the opportunity to play in the Royal Albert Hall in November! These trips are not just about education and music making, they inspire students to rehearse, keep playing, help form new friendships through shared experiences, and increase the positive impact music making has on self esteem and mental health.” The ensembles are part of the Cornwall Music Service Trust, which is an independent charity providing music tuition to schools in Cornwall.
