GOING DUTCH : VERMEER'S WOMEN
Vermeer and his contemporaries celebrated the importance of the Dutch household, and women’s role within it. Dutch seventeenth century interiors almost always include images of women, or remind us of their presence - at work, at leisure or parenting. Dutch painters depicted with great sensitivity this mysterious domestic realm, often inhabited only by women and children. Alice Foster traces the variety of subject matter revealing the modernity of a new nation in seventeenth century Holland.
