The Spectacle of the Magic Eight
Each year on 2nd February, the feast of Candlemas, an extraordinary light show can be seen at La Seu Cathedral in Palma. This rare phenomenon takes place in the morning between approximately 8:00 and 9:00 am. The optimal moment is around 8:30 am, when the rising sun projects the light of the great 11.85-metre rose window of the Trinity Chapel onto the opposite wall, forming the celebrated “magic eight”.
Palma Cathedral is renowned for possessing the largest Gothic rose windows in the world, dating back to the 14th century. While larger windows exist elsewhere, they are neo-Gothic and therefore belong to a much later period. This phenomenon occurs only twice a year — on 11th November and 2nd February — and is an experience every resident of the island should witness at least once.
Our members are warmly invited to meet at the cathedral entrance at 8:00 am to experience this remarkable spectacle together. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to enjoy breakfast together, providing a relaxed and convivial conclusion to the morning.
