Valentine Cards, trade cards, vignettes, even the humble invoice were all ways of promoting an enterprise two hundred years ago. Designed by well-known engravers and artists of the day, such ephemera, whether Rococo, Gothic or Art Nouveau in style, were a reflection of the age. Using his personal archive this lecture illustrates how ephemera really can be art.

Mr John Scott
John Scott graduated in History at the University of Stirling and then had a career in the City at Morgan Grenfell and Deutsche Bank. Elected as a councillor in the City in 1999, he has since served as Chief Commoner and on the governing bodies of the Museum of London, Gresham College, Thames Festival and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He has lectured at Gresham College, the Smithsonian, Ironbridge Museums, the National Waterways Museum and Guildhall Library. All the lectures are based on original unpublished sources from his own archive and, with sufficient notice, he will travel anywhere in the UK and further afield.
