Brodsworth Hall is situated in rolling countryside 5 miles northwest of Doncaster Just over an hour away by Coach from Thirsk
It is arguably the best-preserved complete example of a large Victorian country house and a demonstration of how the household of the time operated. The restored and detailed gardens provide a splendid setting for this imposing Italianate style building
There has been a hall here since Norman times and in 1760s the original manor building was replaced by a Robert Adams designed Hall. One hundred years later this building was demolished to make way for the current hall which was commissioned and built in the 1860s
This was a time of a plenty for the Hall. however in the 20th century between the wars the family and property fell on harder times. English Heritage was gifted the property in 1990 and set about the restoration, first of the house then the gardens. For a full history click HERE
The spacious Hall has a fully furnished interior, every item once owned by 3 successive generations of the Thellusson family. Recently the servants quarters have been renovated to display "life below stairs" The gardens are a summer delight to behold. Apart from the glorious detail and appearance these gardens have won the highest UNESCO platimum Green Impact award fo practical sustainability
There is also an excellent Garden Tea Room providing Yorkshire fare teas and hot lunch food
The results are stunning and so well presented, so this is one not to miss This visit is by coach just over an hour from Thirsk -with the usual pickups and times at Northallerton and Thirsk Exact times will be communicated shortly
