Uniquely rising from Assistant to Principal architect of the IWGC, Charles Holden designed some ‘showpiece cemeteries’ as well as being involved in the minutiae of the Commission’s work in France and Belgium. The style of ‘his’ cemeteries is distinctive for its lack of  ornamentation, leading the Commission’s official historian, Philip Longworth, to make the observation,’almost cruelly severe’ about their austere beauty.
