TAS Kington Langley had a wonderful abstract acrylic painting session

We had a wonderful opportunity, on Tuesday 21st January, to blow away the dead time that is January and be enthusiastic about engaging in a new artistic endeavour.

We were learning how to create abstract acrylic paintings with Rae Melody, a contemporary artist who lives and works in Chippenham and is one of the newer members of TASKL.

Rae came with huge selection of paints, brushes, applicators, canvasses, scrapers, collage materials etc. to support and inspire us in our artistic endeavours.

To many cries of ‘I’ve never done this before’, and ‘I haven’t painted since I was at school’ Rae guided us through those initial fearful first steps of looking at a blank canvas.

Using a selection of Power Point slides and numerous demonstrations we were encouraged to start the first layer and just enjoy what we were doing.

Each piece was to be constructed of overlapping layers, looking at dark and light contrasts, different mark making, and using texture to create the effect we wanted.

The fear leaving us, everyone enjoyed the liberty of developing their ideas knowing that each layer built up to a final abstract piece.

Fuelled by coffee, cakes and music, the time flew by. Rae supported us as everyone added collage and scrubbed back surfaces to help blend the different aspects of their work together.

Each piece of work was unique, representing how each artist responded to the materials, engaged with Rae’s advice and finally celebrated their creativity.

A brilliant morning, sharing time together, learning new skills, working with an inspirational teacher and then taking our pieces home to display to friends and family.

I would like to thank Rae for her professional advice, and encouragement and to all our members for their ability to use their creativity so effectively.
