The Arts Society Mallorca welcomed a full house for an engaging and entertaining presentation by Robert Davis MA MBE DL, who offered a rare glimpse into the traditions, ceremonies and responsibilities of serving as Lord Mayor of Westminster.
Through a photographic journey documenting his year in office, Robert shared personal stories and behind-the-scenes insights into one of Britain's oldest civic roles. The audience was introduced to the ceremonial splendour of the office, including the iconic blue and gold robe, the jabot, mayoral chains and sceptre, while learning about the strict protocols governing their use.
Among the many highlights were Robert’s recollections of reading the official welcome to Nelson Mandela, meeting Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family, and representing Westminster on visits to countries as far afield as China. His reflections illustrated how centuries-old British traditions continue to play an important role on the international stage.
The presentation also revealed the demanding schedule of a Lord Mayor, from tree plantings and ribbon cuttings to countless formal lunches, dinners and civic engagements. Along the way, Robert recounted encounters with celebrities, world leaders and prominent public figures, all delivered with warmth and humour.
Beyond his ceremonial duties, Robert Davis also reflected on his role as Westminster’s Cabinet Member for Business, Culture and Heritage, where he championed the development of London’s theatre sector. He was instrumental in supporting new theatre projects in the West End, including securing the creation of The Other Palace in Victoria and a new theatre on Charing Cross Road, while also founding the popular West End Live festival in Trafalgar Square, helping to strengthen the capital’s reputation as one of the world’s leading theatre destinations.
The lively atmosphere and enthusiastic audience made for an enjoyable evening, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation of the unique customs and ceremonial heritage at the heart of British public life.
A big thank you to Robert Davis for this talk!
