Dear Member
The purpose of this Update is to let you know about the Day of Special Interest on Thursday 27th April on E H Shepard and to let you know about purchasing tickets.
We have two meetings in April and you may buy tickets for the Day of Special Interest at the meeting on next Monday 13th March, when James Russell will be lecturing about "Eric Ravilious: Art and Life" and again at the April 3rd meeting when Nicole Mezey will be presenting "The Art of Stained Glass" - see February 19th Newsletter for details.
MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: Thursday 27th April 10.30am to 3.15pm Ticket: £25.00
Day of Special Interest - E H Shepard
Our Lecturer will be James Campbell MA and his subject will be Ernest Howard Shepard, the iconic illustrator, of A A Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh books which so many of us knew by heart from early childhood. He also first illustrated "The Wind in the Willows" and many more children's books. Less well known is the fact that he worked for "Punch" and was a humourous illustrator of WW1. His own story is fascinating and the pictures are reminiscent of a whole era. James Campbell, his grandson-in-law, will tell of works which have lain undiscovered for nearly a century.
The day starts at 10.30 am with coffee and it will be a DOSI with a difference! Come along and find out. Your ticket will include the coffee, a sandwich lunch with a glass of wine or soft drink. The booking form is available on the website: www.theartssociety.org/henfield Tickets will be on sale at the March and April meetings or contact: Rosemary Nice 01273 492221. This day promises to be very popular so early booking is recommended.
SUBSCRIPTION PAYMENT: Again a reminder to those members who owe payment of their subscription at £40; others need to pay the balance of their outdated standing orders which are either still at £34 (£6) or £29 (£11)! HON SECRETARY AND HON TREASURER: We are still urgently seeking someone to take on the role of Secretary and also someone to take over as Treasurer.
OUTING: For our first outing post Covid Julia Simpson and Jenny Ives will be leading an outing on Thursday 20th April to the newly refurbished Towner Gallery, Eastbourne to view the permanent collection of Eric Ravilious' art. We will be travelling by car/s so please let us know if you would like to join us. So far we have four cars available! Donation of £5.00 towards the cost of fuel. Please book by email to: henfield@theartssociety.org. or sign up at the March or April meetings.
The May meeting will now be held on Monday May 15th, following the Coronation.
Monday 15th May: "Mad Men and Artists: how the advertising industry has exploited fine art" with Tony Rawlins. Advertisements which show art tend to use a soft sell approach and promote prestigious goods with some over-representation of cultural establishments, cosmetics, fashion apparel and furniture. The predominant artistic style in these ads is Renaissance. The representation of modern art is significantly lower, and non-western art is hardly represented. Why have these biases arisen in this industry?
We are now sending the Newsletters via MailChimp. We have addressed you using "First Name/s" - if you wish to be addressed in a different manner, please let Jenny (Ives) Membership Secretary know at henfield@theartssociety.org.
With all good wishes from Caroline and the Committee.
