John Singer Sargent Exhibition - Kenwood House

On a rain threatened morning last week, thirty-seven members set off for Kenwood House which is in Hampstead and was originally built in the 17th century.
Our essential first port of call was the delightful outdoor coffee shop which was an opportunity for us all to relax, meet up and mingle in the sunshine. Our appointment to view the John Singer Sargent exhibition was booked for 12.30 pm so there was time to view the permanent exhibition in the other rooms of the elegant Victorian house or to explore the well-tended, extensive gardens.
The theme of the exhibition was “Heiress” – Sargent’s American Portraits. There was a range of paintings of young women from wealthy American families who arrived here to marry British aristocrats. Most of the heiresses were painted in their twenties, post marriage and they ‘carry off their enhanced status with style and aplomb…’ The works included paintings and some skilful charcoal drawings. Many of us recognised the stylish portrait of Nancy, Lady Astor, usually housed at Cliveden.
As we had a private entry, there was a good opportunity to discuss with others the merits of the works and hear the opinions of others whilst viewing each painting or drawing.
The permanent rooms were also of great interest, including Old Masters and particularly the elegant library designed by the architect of the day, John Adam who significantly remodelled the building into a neoclassical villa in the 18th century.
The relaxed programme enabled the members to choose their own route around the house and the gardens, enhanced by our good luck that the weather remained very pleasant all day!
