Exhibition of Joseph Wright's Art at National Gallery

Exhibition of Joseph Wright's Art at National Gallery

31 Aug 2025

Fancy a day out in London before Christmas? By coincidence, just one month after our lecture on the work of Joseph Wright, a special exhibition called Wright of Derby - From the Shadows opens on 7 November in the Sunley Room of the National Gallery. It runs until 10 May 2026.

This is billed as the very first major exhibition dedicated to the British artist's 'candlelight' paintings, which typically depict illuminated faces of people gathered around a variety of objects, ranging from classical sculptures to scientific instruments, bones and animals. To quote from the blurb: "In an interplay of light and darkness, Joseph Wright of Derby conjures sublime pictures of discovery and learning." Standard admission costs from £12. More details are available on the National Gallery's website.
