The Church Recording group of the Arts Society Farnham have recently presented the record of their researches into St. Michael the Archangel, Aldershot.
Amongst the items described which represent the church’s long history are Sir John White’s medieval funeral helm; the National War Memorial Album that records the stories behind stones from blitz damaged buildings throughout the countrywhich form the Heroes’ Shrine in Aldershot Manor Park; and an embroidered triple banner designed by Elizabeth Brown of Tredegar. This banner, a representation of the church’s patron, was presented to a retiring vicar 15 years ago and is hung on an unusual Tudor ironstone brick wall, previously an outside wall of the tower. The wall features an example of the local technique of garnetting when small stones are used as mortar infill. It is now an internal wall of the church as a result of extensions in the 19th century to accommodate the increasing presence of the Army in Aldershot.
As well as producing the Record, the group also undertook repairs to hymn books and gave a framed panel of information about the St Michael banner as well as a booklet with further research on the National War Memorial Album.
