The Arts Society, Halifax meets monthly (except in August and September), for lectures at Calderdale Music, The Old Courthouse, Blackwall, Halifax, HX1 2DL
Lectures are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 1.00pm.
THE NEXT LECTURE IS ON TUESDAY 11 FEBRUARY, 2025
Igniting the Rainbow: The Dramatic Developments in Colour in Textiles in the 19th Century (also known as Poison, Poo and Mad Scientists)
Lecturer: Dr Susan Kay-Williams
This examination of dyeing and social history begins with the developments in natural colour at the end of the C18 and then looks at developments in the C19. These include: the work of Michel Chevreul at the Gobelins factory in Paris, the impact of the great international exhibitions, and the serendipitous discovery of coal tar colours by William Perkin which resulted in hundreds of new colours and shades used in everything from fashion to painting and household items.
Please note that this meeting on 11 February will be Members Only (ie no Guest tickets will be available) as we continue to monitor attendance and capacity at the new venue.
