Welcome to The Arts Society Scarborough which covers coast and country

The Arts Society Scarborough operated under the name of Scarborough Decorative and Fine Arts Society for thirty four years.  The Arts Society was formed to bring together people interested in the arts, who wished to see and hear inspiring and beautifully illustrated lectures from experts, to visit museums, galleries, historic houses and gardens, and to increase and broaden their knowledge of art in all respects, whilst having fun, learning new skills and making new friends.

In 2002 the Scarborough Society hosted the National Annual General Meeting of The Arts Society at the Scarborough Spa with over 800 delegates from all over the UK and overseas.

2008 saw Scarborough celebrate its 25th birthday with a lecture given by Christopher Lewis, who is a retired executive director of the Antiques Roadshow: he shared with us his unusual, funny and often surprising anecdotes from behind the scenes of this famous TV show.

Scarborough members acted as stewards for the filming of the BBC's Antiques Roadshow in Scarborough’s Spa in 2003 and 2012.

In 2013 SDFAS celebrated 30 years with a Christmas luncheon at The Downe Arms Country Hotel followed by a slice of rich fruit cake baked and very skilfully decorated by Committee Member, Gillian Bapty.  This delicious cake was ceremoniously cut by three of our original Committee Members from over 30 years ago.

Over the last two years our two and three day tours included visits to Lincoln Cathedral; the Coalport China Museum; Littlethorpe Manor; Wentworth Woodhouse; Highgrove Garden etc.  Next year we plan to visit Highclere Castle; The Royal Derby Museum; Sandham Memorial Chapel and Waddesdon Manor.

For many years our volunteers conserved books at Mulgrave Castle’s magnificent library.  Twenty members completed a detailed record of the contents of St Oswald’s Church in Filey.  Our Society assisted in raising funds for the restoration of the beautiful Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows at St Martin-on-the-Hill Church in Scarborough.  One of our many projects was to raise funds for the restoration of a 19th century Incense Burner, which had been made to perfume London Bridge on the marriage of King Edward VII to Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Our Young Arts projects are supporting Scarborough Hospital with a variety of art materials for the Children’s Ward and supporting The Street’s Prevention Service in their work with young people in our area, by helping to buy materials for a project on tie dyeing. The resulting material will become personalized designs for young people’s clothing.
