Here in Penang, Malaysia, we are proud and delighted to be the first of The Arts Society branches in Asia.
Penang, founded in 1786 by Francis Light as a possession of the East India Company, later becoming part of the Federation of Malaysia, has a rich colonial heritage, with many fine buildings. In 2008, George Town was given UNESCO World Heritage status and there is a lively arts scene with many young international artists. It’s a city of fast dwindling traditional craftspeople (lantern painters, joss stick makers, and sign carvers) and vibrantly painted walls. The annual George Town Festival, usually held in the month of August, is rapidly becoming an international fixture.
