'Henry Moore - Form and Material

at the Museum Beelden aan Zee, Scheveningen

The Museum, in close collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, is presenting a large-scale retrospective of the oeuvre of Henry Moore (1898-1986).  This artist is considered one of the most important British artists of the 20th century.

A selection of around one hundred top objects and sculptures from his substantial legacy, will give the viewer an insight into the artist´s development.  What inspired him?  What influence did the material he used have on his work?  And the often-immense size of his work, where did that come from?

Henry Moore´s work is instantly recognizable; he had developed a style of his own - be it hewn in stone or cast in lead or bronze.

After the First World War, he began to participate in numerous British and International exhibitions, solo as well as group exhibitions.  His work was sold to such an extent that he became established as an important modernist sculptor.

The Second World War put his career 'on hold' and he accepted a commission as a war artist.  He produced deeply moving Shelter Drawings of Londoners sheltering from the Blitz in underground stations.

In the 1950s the size of his sculptures increased and he created larger groups of figures.  As his fame increased enormously, so did the prices of his sculptures.

During his career Henry Moore received a huge number of prizes.

His work can be found all over the world, and is particularly well presented in the Netherlands.

The Museum Beelden aan Zee is proud to present a pioneer of European sculpture, who grew to become a world-famous artist.  This exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions of such grand masters as Niki de Saint-Phalle (2019), Zadkine (2018) and Picasso (2016).
