Special Interest Day Hybrid: 3 lectures. 200th anniversary of George IV

On coming to the throne George IV instinctively understood the majesty and splendour appropriate to the monarch of the richest and most powerful country in the world.  His coronation in July 1821 was the most magnificent ever.
For the Royal Collection we must firstly thank King Charles I who collected prodigiously, although Cromwell sold a lot of the collection. King George IV purchased back many of those works of art for the Royal Collection, and collected avidly, adding prestigious art works from his own period.  He converted Buckingham House to a Palace and gilded and decorated Windsor Castle.  A fascinating day and something to reflect on today.
