Sir Joshua Reynolds to Tracey Emin

In 2018 the Royal Academy celebrates 250 years since its foundation. Marking that anniversary, this lecture looks at some of the artists involved at the very beginning, including the first President, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and brings us right up to date, to a Royal Academy that numbers contemporary artists such as Tracey Emin and Cornelia Parker amongst its members. Along the way we look at some colourful characters connected with the RA, from staunch supporters to artistic rebels, and some of the controversies the institution has been involved in, as well as at the Summer Exhibition, always central to its role.
