On 1st December 2017 an enlightening and hands-on workshop ‘Introduction to Animation and Film Making’ was sponsored by The Arts Society Devizes.

Twenty students in the Year 10 Photography Group at Lavington School worked in teams of four, each with its nominated Director, Animator, Artist/model maker and Camera Operator. Each group created a story line, using a Story Board to help define the sequence of their story, creating different emotion and movement of their chosen stick character. They used plasticine for 3D effect (as in Wallace & Gromit), or card for 2D (as in South Park). The students used their own mobile phones to create and develop their animation.

The workshop was led by professional Animators ‘Open Cage Films’, whose key message is ‘Opening the mind’. They said: ‘We were impressed at how readily the students could visualise and develop their own ideas, confidently taking ownership of their projects from start to finish. It was heart-warming to watch them working together so intently to produce such fabulous animation sequences.

Feedback from students:

  • I’ve definitely decided I’m going to become a Film Director!,
  • the workshop was educational but fun.
